Concept art for a picture book that contrasts the experiences that a parrot has as he transitions from being a pet to becoming an adopted member of a large park family of crows
Design brief: Van Gogh National Park Theme: Transition between the natural & urban landscapes
For pet parrots, the transition from an urban life to a natural one is not yet possible. I developed concept art for a picture book told from the perspective of Sem, a pet hyacinth macaw who makes that transition. When he escapes, Sem gets adopted by a park community of crows. That’s how he learns that crows call humans “Kiwis”, that is, “awkward, flightless, extremely dangerous creatures that only see a limited range of colours” in crowspeak.
