An experiential video and radio installation set in the impending, UN-predicted 2080 global food security crisis
Design brief: Next Nature Network Theme: retro future
I developed a design fiction project set in the year 2080. I chose that year, because the UN made a disclosure in 2020 that all fertile soil on Earth is set to erode within 60 years’ time. The installation is set in the New North, the geopolitical region that scientists predict will become the main planetary powerhouse later this century. This region is going to monopolize the largest arable land surface area that will be left on the planet by then, resulting from melted polar ice.
I constructed two parallel narratives, set in 2080, to instil in visitors a sense of intergenerational justice.
The research-backed macro tale, about the future planetary soil crisis, food insecurity and geopolitical shifts, is told through story panels and a radio broadcast.
The fictional micro story, about a character who uses soilless techniques to grow precious wheat on jute garments, is relayed through a short film and designed props.
