A proposal for an animal park for locally endangered animal and plant species, producing a new kind of city space in the process.
There are more than sixty establishments in the Netherlands that are licensed as a zoo. I propose to transform these spaces into functioning, biodiverse ecosystems for locally endangered animal and plant species. This proposal advocates for redefining the relationship between humans and other animals, and gives concrete suggestions for having resident animals represented in animal park institutions.
The project takes the form of a handmade book with original maps and illustrations. I applied my ideas to a possible reimagining of Artis, the Amsterdam zoo. I’m now searching for an opportunity to turn one of the 60+ Dutch zoos into a model animal park.
